Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path (Ps 119:105).
Two women are lost at night in a dark wood, desperate to get home. Each of them is handed a glowing lamp.
One of the women immediately starts examining the lamp. She pulls out a magnifying glass to study it more closely. She gets out a tape measure to measure every piece of it. She starts taking it apart to examine what it's made of.
The other woman holds the lamp high, to illuminate her path. She walks out of the woods to her home. She even lights the way for others to join her on the road to warmth and safety.
Which woman reminds you of the way you want to read the Bible?
Most of you know that I'm a Bible scholar. I have a Ph.D. in Old Testament. I've taken, and taught, Biblical Greek and Hebrew. I've read a lot of books and articles about the Bible, in a few different languages. I've learned a lot of useful things along the way, and I love to share that knowledge.
However, my passion--our passion as a church--isn't just to learn a bunch of facts about the Bible. Our passion is listening to God. When we read the Bible in our homes each morning, or read the Bible together, we listen for what God's Spirit is speaking to us.
Our passion is listening to God.
"Take and read" is our current sermon series about the Bible, and the way that people have opened their Bibles to hear what God has to say. God's voice reassures us, strengthens us, guides us. God's voice lights our way home.
