Life Out of Death

I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels--a plentiful harvest of new lives. John 12:24

It isn't an accident that Easter falls in the springtime. Jesus compares his own death and resurrection to the way a seed falls to the ground and is buried--only to spring forth in new life. Jesus knew that in order to bring unending life to everyone, he had to die.

Maundy Thursday and Good Friday dive deep into the sorrow Jesus and his disciples felt as they faced the coming agony of the crucifixion, when Jesus would seem to have given his last breath, when the disciples would seem to have lost their friend and Lord, when all their dreams of loyal allegiance would seem to have ended in denying and betraying and abandoning him.

But where everyone else saw only a death, Jesus saw a seed planted. Jesus endured it all for the joy set before him (Hebrews 12:2). Jesus knew that his sufferings were bringing many children to glory (Hebrews 2:10).

Easter morning celebrates the miracle of resurrection--life coming on the other side of death.

Because of the resurrection of Jesus, we know that death is not the end. We know that when darkness falls, when failure threatens to end our dreams, when love seems to end in betrayal or abandonment, new life is lurking just around the corner.

Join us this Sunday to celebrate!
